Del McCoury Band and Eddie Kowalczyk from LIVE presented by 97.3 KBCO
Live Show: Thursday, Jul 23, 2009 7:00 pm Location: The Boulder Theater
There's a fantastic Etown this week, featuring the return of popular bluegrass legends, The Del McCoury Band. Del (celebrating his 50th year in bluegrass) and his amazing band (sons Ronnie & Robbie, plus Alan Bartram and Jason Carter) deliver solid rhythms, soaring solos and spine-chilling harmony vocals. Then, powerful singer and superb songwriter (and Del McCoury and Etown fan) Eddie Kowalczyk makes his first visit to Etown. Eddie steps out from his multi-platinum, alt-rock band LIVE to perform some rare solo acoustic songs along with some featuring stellar musical and vocal accompaniment from Nick & Helen Forster and the Etones. And wait until you hear the finale! There's also an inspiring E-Chievement Award story waiting for you this week, right here in Etown.
Del McCoury Band
Del McCoury marks his 50 year career mark with 'Celebrating 50 Years of Del McCoury,' a new box set of fresh recordings that look back at an amazing legacy. Vince Gill says it simply and maybe best in summarizing Del's appeal..."I'd rather hear Del McCoury sing 'Are You Teasing Me' than just about anything."
The Del McCoury Band is known for the ability to mix an appreciation for the rich traditions of bluegrass along with a keen awareness of the best in other musical styles, winning them the devotion of bluegrass fanatics and turning on new fans beyond their bluegrass following. Del McCoury has been a bluegrass star since joining Bill Monroe's Blue Grass Boys in 1963. His sons Ronnie and Robbie joined the band in 1981 and 1987 respectively and in their own right are now known as two of the finest instrumentalists of their generation.
Eddie Kowalczyk from LIVE
Eddie Kowalczyk, widely known as the lead singer/frontman/guitarist of the band LIVE, has built an impressive resume with his bandmates that includes 8 full-length albums, total album sales exceeding 20 million, a huge international fanbase, and extensive touring all over the world. LIVE has been one of the most successful and enduring alternative rock bands of the 1990s and 2000s.
One of the main things that has enabled LIVE to maintain a devoted fanbase is the substantial and durable nature of their lyrics, which have often reflect Kowalczyk's personal and spiritual concerns. "My approach as a songwriter is to write songs that are not finite and will resonate with listeners for a really long time," Kowalczyk observes. "Sixteen years after our first album, 'Mental Jewelry', I am still able to get something out of songs LIVE recorded in the early 1990s. I think that one of the reasons why we have had so many fans for so long is that our fans are also continuing to find nuances in our songs."
Eddie is now offering and accentuating these nuances in a more intimate setting through his solo acoustic performances and showcasing a new side to the songs contained on the band's latest album 'Live at the Paradiso - Amsterdam' featuring live versions of their biggest hits plus two new songs "Forever" and "Purifier". Eddie is excited to be performing with the Del McCoury Band at Etown where he can share his affinity of roots music and show yet another side of his musicality.
